Island of Hoy Day Trip
(Thursday Only)

Only £99 per person

Discover Hoy, Orkney’s highest and most rugged island, whose name derives from the Old Norse word Haey, meaning "high." Renowned for its dramatic landscapes and unique wildlife, Hoy offers some of the most stunning scenery in Orkney. This full-day guided tour explores the island, packed with history, nature, and breathtaking views.

Tour Highlights:

•    Rackwick Bay & the Hills of Hoy: Journey through the wilderness to this secluded bay, surrounded by towering cliffs (the highest vertical cliffs in the UK). Visit the historic Old Rackwick School, a window into Orkney’s rural past, and take a walk to Craa Nest, a hidden gem offering spectacular coastal views. Enjoy a peaceful picnic amid nature—don’t forget to bring your packed lunch!

•    Dwarfie Stane & Betty Corrigall’s Grave: Unearth the mysteries of Hoy with a visit to the ancient Dwarfie Stane, a 5,000-year-old Neolithic tomb, and hear the poignant tale of Betty Corrigall at her remote gravesite.

•    Lyrawa Hill: Take in panoramic views from this 111m hilltop lookout, offering a stunning vista of Scapa Flow, the Pentland Firth, and Orkney’s southern isles. Pause here for complimentary hot or cold drinks and snacks.

•    Hoy’s Wartime History: Explore Hoy’s pivotal role in both World Wars, visiting the former naval base and the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery, where stories of courage and sacrifice come alive.

•    Scapa Flow Museum, Nature walk, or Lifeboat Museum: End your day with one of several options, tailored to the weather and group preferences. You might explore the Scapa Flow Museum, delving into Orkney’s wartime heritage, enjoy a short cliff-top walk, or visit the Lifeboat Museum, celebrating the island’s maritime history.

Throughout the day, our expert guides will keep an eye out for wildlife, including hen harriers, otters, seals, and the notorious bonxie (great skua).

Please Note:
This tour involves walking over uneven terrain, including a hike to the Dwarfie Stane, a walk to Craa Nest and possibly a nature walk. While these walks are suitable for those with a moderate level of fitness, sturdy footwear is essential. If you have any mobility concerns, please let us know in advance so we can try our best to accommodate. Guests are welcome to wait in the vehicle if they prefer not to participate in the walks.

Due to there being so much to see, unfortunately we can't fit the three hour return walk to the Old Man of Hoy in to this tour,  (please see bespoke tour).
